The UN Ensemble was born in 2012 under the leadership of David Chiesa. It gathers more than 23 musicians, but it is in total some 60 artists who participate or have already participated in this Ensemble. Until September 2018, the particularity of this orchestra rested on the fact that it gathered musicians coming from very diverse musical horizons (improvisation, classical music, contemporary, experimental, rock, jazz...) to approach a singular sound space anchored in the current musical creation. The challenge of such a diversity of genres was to find a way to make these musicians play together. Different forms of score elaboration were experimented to find a common language accessible to all.
The Ensemble regularly called upon composers who wrote pieces based on its specificities.
With this orchestra, the ensemble's repertoire consisted of 14 original pieces that were performed in festivals and venues in France and Switzerland.
The Ensemble UN also develops transversal axes with other practices such as light (Christophe Cardoen), experimental cinema (Etienne Caire), dance (Laure Terrier and Sylvie Balestra).
If this UN could seize these compositional and experimental forms, it is because the musicians who composed it came from very different musical horizons and their openness to music made them meet. They still take demanding and very varied artistic routes, engaging a virtuosity which is their own and whose purpose is anchored in the current creation. Far from the aesthetic chapels and in a non hierarchy of knowledge, this UN Ensemble invented a music, a sound of its own, a capacity that its members had to apprehend these new writings with a personal musical baggage.
With a variable geometry, the UN Ensemble favors the emergence of projects led by the musicians who compose it and who are part of the same artistic approach: an approach between writing and improvisation and the transversality between artistic practices. It is about ten related proposals which come to complete the range and the diversity of the repertoire of the Ensemble.
